New New York Restaurant Hit List
Lately I've been hopping back and forth a lot between Paris and New York to play shows with my band, Jeremy And The Harlequins. Although the journey is exhausting and I can never seem to adjust to the time change before leaving again, the trip affords me the opportunity to try new restaurants and bars, and to load up of frequent flyer miles. With the help of my brother, Jeremy, I discovered several new restaurants that will become my new "go-to spots" for future visits. Here are some of the highlights from my most recent trip:
Turntable- After going to a New York Rangers hockey game against the Carolina Hurricanes at Madison Square Gardens, where NY won 4-1, Korea Town was just a hop, skip, and a jump away. My brother wanted to take me to Turntable, a Korean fried chicken restaurant/bar. This place is just like being in Hongdae in Seoul. Delicious fried chicken, tteokbokki, beer, soju, and cocktails, along with a few other items make up their menu. After already having a few pops at the game, and starting with more cocktails upon arriving at the restaurant, I absentmindedly forgot to take a photo of the chicken. Joe's Shanghai- This restaurants popularity is well deserved. Very solid Chinese cooking at a reasonable price with a fast and efficient kitchen and waitstaff make this place a great option in Chinatown. The walls are adorned with photos of celebrities who've eaten here and someday, hopefully my photo may make it up as well. It seems as if every table orders at least one steam basket of soup dumplings along with several dishes to share. I too partook in soup dumplings, along with string beans Szechuan style, and shrimp and chicken in plum sauce. Everything was delicious and they give orange slices for dessert. Noodle Village- Deterred by a huge line and the cash only policy at Joe's Shanghai on a Saturday afternoon, I found Noodle Village through an extensive Yelp search. With a nearly all Chinese clientele, which I take as a good sign, this restaurant makes everything from Hong Kong style noodles, to congee, hot pot rice, noodle soups, and soup dumplings.
